A Typical Senior Day
The Golden Corner Food Pantry Senior Program is designed to ensure that senior citizens, 60 years and older with less than $1300/month income have sufficient and balanced food to improve their quality of life.
On any given Monday, 30-35 willing volunteers (of the 225 total volunteers) start arriving around 7:00 a.m. to begin putting together the senior packages. The typical package includes a mixture of canned foods and staples, fresh breads, fruits and vegetables and frozen meats weighing approximately 70-85 lbs.
Our senior clients, approximately 600/month are eligible to receive their package on Mondays between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Upon arrival at the pantry, our clients are greeted and their eligibility is reviewed. They then proceed to a loading area where designated volunteers load their food package into their vehicle for their convenience.
Approximately half of the food distributed (1.4 million pounds per year) is donated by local grocery stores e.g. Wal-Mart, BI-LO, Food Lion and Publix and the other half is purchased from Golden Harvest, a non-profit national food distribution organization, using funds received from our generous donors’. Important to note, we are able to purchase food at a significantly reduced cost, enabling each donated dollar to go much further since we only pay for processing and handling vs. the food itself.
