Gathering Food from Our Local Supporters
Every week of the year 65 dedicated volunteers are on the road in our community gathering donated food from local food stores. Yes , seven days a week, 365 days a year, this group travels the far corners of our community to gather what is available from our key supporters. Whether it is Walmart, Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Publix, Big Lots or small businesses like Fruit Stand or Blue Marble, our volunteers are there with vans, pick-up trucks, trailers, hatchbacks and anything else that has wheels to gather food which in most cases will be in the homes of needy families within the next 7 days.
This is really the engine that makes the Golden Corner Food Pantry work for the community. In fact, the efforts of this volunteer group supply about half of the over 1.5 million pounds of food we provide each year for needy families. The rest is purchased from Golden Harvest Food Bank in Georgia or donated from churches, civic and business organization in various annual food drives.
The type of food collected by this team covers the spectrum-mixed fresh produce, breads, meats, delicious desserts and frozen delights to name a few. Everything is brought back to the food pantry where it is unloaded, weighed, and moved directly to our cooler, freezer, or storage racks where other volunteers organize the food into bags and boxes for our senior and regular family clients. A truly remarkable effort by a truly outstanding group of people.
If you can help reap the harvest that the community has to offer, please call Barb at 703-618-5419. We are always looking for help from willing volunteers who have a desire to serve.
