#GivingTuesdayhas come and gone, but at the GoldenCorner Food Pantry in Seneca, we’re taking the longer view, and we have some exciting news! Two generous donors have offered to contribute up to a total of $10,000 in matching funds to double the contributions of anyone who designates a gift to the pantry for the“Improved Nutrition Program”, not on one day, but all the way through the end of February 2019.
People traditionally think of giving to charities during the holiday season, but hunger is one thing that can last well beyond a single season. Until we can figure out a way to end hunger permanently, low-income and unemployed parents will need help feeding their families, elderly neighbors living on fixed incomes will need help getting enough healthy food to retain their independence, and working folks who can’t quite make ends meet won’t have to choose between buying healthy food and paying the rent or the heating bill.
At the Golden Corner Food Pantry we are on track to distribute 1.2 million pounds of food to an average of 1,150 Oconee County families per month in 2018. Our Improved Nutrition Program goes beyond the traditional box of canned food—we buy milk and eggs, whole grain cereals, good canned protein sources, etc.—to help low-income residents of Oconee County stretch their paychecks or Social Security benefits to keep themselves and their families as healthy as possible.
So while you’re enjoying your holiday food, or your Bowl Game or Super Bowl tailgating parties this month, and during January and February, please think about making a gift to the Improved Nutrition Program at the Golden Corner Food Pantry. Not only will your gift go twice as far as it normally would with those matching funds, but because our pantry operates with only one paid employee and 250+ dedicated volunteers, 95% of all donated funds are used for program services. Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving!
