All the work at the Food Pantry is done by about 250 volunteers. Many volunteers choose one day each week to help out, but if you are only available one to three days per month, we can still use your help. If you are interested in joining, multiple opportunities as described below.
Daily Volunteers
Monday – Friday and 1st Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Work with 10 or more other volunteers to do one or more of these jobs:
- Interview/sign-in existing and potential clients to ensure they meet requirements. Also understand their overall needs and guide them to an appropriate local agency or church to help them become more self-sufficient.
- Assemble boxes of canned food and staples, bags of bread, frozen meat, fruits and vegetables, milk and eggs and other foods for Family clients.
- Sort and ‘shelve’ newly received food, clean up area at end of day, restock shelves, put away empty boxes, etc.
Grocery & Box Pick up Volunteers
Per an assigned schedule, one morning each week (or as often as you are able) from 8-10 am:
- Drive to a designated local store (WalMart, Food Lion). Pick up the food they donate and take it to the Pantry. At the Pantry (Monday-Friday and 1st Saturday), unload the food. Volunteers weigh, mark and store it. On weekends, drivers pick up the food, take it to the Pantry, unload the food, weigh, mark and store it. You must have an SUV or pick-up truck and be able to lift boxes 25 lbs+.
- Other volunteers drive the Pantry refrigerated truck to pick up food from Publix stores and Sam’s Club.
- Volunteers are also needed to go to local grocery stores and pick up empty boxes for us to use (per an assigned schedule). This can be done at other times of the day.
For all volunteer jobs, people work selected days each week, and we also need people who can be flexible filling-in on short notice on a given day.
